Santorini, Greece
The
waxing crescent moon shaped Santorini is a gem of Aegean Sea. It is a group of
islands known as Thira. They are located about 200 Km from the mainland of
Greece towards southeast in Aegean Sea.
It
is a site of one of world’s largest volcanic eruption and even today is an
active volcano with its crater in the sea. The Santoroni islands are the result
of 12 massive volcanic eruptions, with a frequency of one eruption per 20,000
years approximately. Every eruption resulted in collapse of old crater and
creation of even larger crater (caldera) every time. In the year 1950 the most
recent volcanic activity took place. The complete area of Santoroni in itself
is nature’s biggest geological/volcanological meuseum with diverse variety of
geological structures and forms.
Beautiful
and mesmerizing villages in Cycladic architecture have been constructed around
the edges of caldera. It
is becoming one the most sought after
tourist destination in Greece and
also gaining popularity worldwide as tourist spot. It has eye catching sugary
white houses , pristine windmill and blue domed churches surrounded with
crystal clear water available, rare to get in the world.
It
is gaining exponential popularity as a “wedding place” not only in Greece
but people across the world are also
coming here for the same. The beautiful sunset of Santorini is the
unforgettable romantic experience!
Fira
the capital of island seems to be a mesmerizing painting over the blue canvas
of Aegan sea. The villages Oia, ImerovĂgli and Firostefáni
along with Fira are said to be the “Caldera’s eyebrow” situated on the heights
of a cliff.
The
island in itself is a paradise of culinary. Test your taste buds with fresh
and locally grown famous products like
white brinjals, Fava, cherry tomatoes, caper etc. and a unique goat cheese
prepared by localites . The variety of grape wine available is unique in its
taste because of volcanic soil in which they are grown.
